Research and Project Consultancy

ResearchConsultISM is able to undertake a variety of research work, drawing on its own professional and academic expertise as well as utilising the likes of professional statisticians and market researchers. This enables us to offer our clients a service not generally available from other marine consultants.

Whether the research is into safety management, the ISM Code, human factor issues, ergonomics or other maritime related interests, ConsultISM can conduct in-depth research and analysis tailormade to the client’s requirements.

Past Research Projects

Work that has already been carried for our clients includes the following;

Research for the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency

Investigationg the impact and effectiveness of the ISM Code on the UK fleet and its influence on the development of a safety culture in the commercial shipping industry. This research project was probably the most in-depth study of the ISM Code to date and helped the MCA gauge how the ISM Code was functioning in reality.

All areas of the industry, including seafarers, ship operators and insurers were canvassed with many face-to-face interviews being held with the respondents.

Research for an EU funded project (SAFEMED)

Investigating apparent  imbalances between EU and non-EU countries in the Mediterranean in relation to their effectiveness of dealing with maritime legislation and in particular dealing with pollution response.

ConsultISM was specifically tasked with looking at the way in which ISM was being implemented and monitored onboard national flag vessels as well as foreign vessels visiting their ports. This project also provided practical help and assistance to some non-EU countries in offering advice and recommendations for improvement.

Visits were made to national Flag Administrations, training academies and ships for the purpose of interviews.

Clients using our research and project consultancy services include:

Project Consultancy

ReportOur experts can provide project consultancy for a variety of purposes and solutions outside of the main scope of our core services. These projects can range from relatively straightforward tasks that take a day or so to more complex project work that may involve a combination of research, development and implementation. Clients meanwhile can range from a ship operator to an oil major or Flag Administration.

In carrying out a project we are able to form a project team utilising our own staff and deploying resources from our select group of consultants with the relevant expertise for the particular project.

Examples of Project Consultancy

The following is a selection of project work showing the diversity of the types of services we are able to offer.

  • Assistance with writing of publications - The most recent example of this is ConsultISM’s major role in revising the ICS/ISF publication “Guidelines on the Application of the IMO International Safety Management Code.”
  • Auditing of sub-contractors - An Oil Major has tasked ConsultISM to conduct a major audit and review of its offshore sub-contractors and vessels.• Safety Management System Reviews. Various companies have used ConsultISM to help them improve and streamline their systems.
  • TMSA - Assistance can be given to prepare for Oil Major TMSA audits.
  • Oil Terminals - Requests have been received from terminals requiring help with hip vetting as well as implementing safety management systems for terminal vessels.
  • Human Factors - The examination of human factors within shipping and the controls that can be put in.
