Training and Education
Training Today
There has never been a time where good training and education has been more critical, whether it is for the seafarer, those involved ashore in ship operations or other bodies involved in the maritime community.
Ship Operating Companies / Manning Agencies
The Seafarer
It is widely believed that the knowledge of some seafarers needs to improve for the benefit of increasing safety and operational standards and in order to reduce the risk of accidents and claims.
Along with our human factor experts, our experienced team of trainers and our training partners Maersk Training Centre UK Ltd, we can offer a wide variety of courses that will enable seastaff to be better equipped for today’s shipping needs.
Ship Operating Companies
Shore Staff
Some operators and managers are having to recruit office staff with less experience than would have been the case a number of years ago. This can result in a lesser understanding of the industry, on how safety should be properly managed and what happens when things go wrong.
ConsultISM can offer shipping companies courses that will result in a better and practical understanding of responsibilities surrounding safety management and in particular the roles of the DPA. These courses can be geared toward all levels of management up to and including CEO level.
Other Sectors
Training for other industry bodies is also essential in order to fully understand how ships should be operated safely and in particular how the ISM Code has become an integral part of claims negotiation, arbitration, disputes and litigation.
ConsultISM has a variety of courses available for the following members of the industry:
Training for flag and port state inspectors can also be conducted by ConsultISM for onboard inspections or incident investigation.
Maersk Training Centre
In 2009 ConsultISM linked up to create a successful training partnership with Maersk Training Centre UK Ltd (MTC) in Newcastle.
This has allowed both ConsultISM and MTC to offer an unrivalled selection of courses to clients ranging from a unique training course for anybody involved with the role of the DPA (recognised by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency) through to ship safety officer courses and tailored ISM specific courses.
The alliance also increases the sharing of facilities and resources across the globe. Successful practical, interactive workshops have already been held in Newcastle, Piraeus, Glasgow and, most recently, Copenhagen.
Further workshops are scheduled to take place in Cyprus (September 2010), Singapore (November 2010) and Miami (January 2011).
GlobalMet
ConsultISM is a full Member of GlobalMET (the Global Maritime Education and Training Association) which has NGO status at the IMO.
Bureau Veritas
ConsultISM is delighted to be working with Bureau Veritas Regional Training Centre in Croatia in providing an exciting range of training courses for the shore based as well as the ship staff of ship operating companies, and developing further courses to be delivered in many other centres.
There is no element of exclusivity in this training. Indeed, ConsultISM Ltd would be very pleased to discuss with other organisations, or individual ship operating companies, ways in which we may be able to assist with in-house, bespoke programmes to those in either the role of the DPA, Operational, Technical or Safety Personnel, as well as to Company CEOs and Senior Management with the aim of helping you take the risk out of your company - the ConsultISM “deriskification” process.
We bring to the training room a unique wealth of experience gained not only at the sharp end of Risk Management and ISM implementation onboard ships and in the offices of ship operators, but also the learning experience of having been involved in over 100 legal cases where the management of risk and safety have been contributory factors.Details of available, 'off-the-shelf' Courses:Risk Management and Risk AssessmentTypical Duration: Two and one half daysThe unique course on Risk Management and Risk Assessments has been designed through a common-sense approach to marine risk combined with interactive workshops, enabling delegates to better understand the purpose and importance of risk management, and the use of risk assessments in their daily work. This practical knowledge forms an essential element to assist and strengthen the way that risk is handled within an organisation and promotes a stronger safety culture - an essential ingredient in any ship operating company. The course is suitable for both office staff and ships’ officers alike and is facilitated by trainers who have hands-on experience in marine risk management.Incident InvestigationTypical Duration: Two and one half daysThe Incident Investigation course guides the delegate through the process of carrying out an efficient and effective investigation. Accidents, unfortunately, do happen but it is important that they are correctly investigated with a view to determining the real causes behind the event, using the results to learn important lessons and avoiding recurrence of a similar incident in the future. The course involves real-life maritime case studies and practical workshops, and is designed to give delegates an understanding of the various approaches involved in conducting an investigation. This includes the methods of analysing information, root cause analysis, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and preparing a meaningful report, as well as exploring the human factor issues that invariably surround most incidents. DPA Update and RefresherTypical Duration: Two daysThis is not intended as a training course, in the strict sense of the term. but is an opportunity for busy Executives to stand back and reflect upon the changes and developments which have been occurring in the industry that have a direct impact upon the way a ship operator manages safety and implements its SMS. The program includes updates on such things as the Role of the DPA and the requirements with regard to conducting risk assessments on the Company’s operational risks and constructing a Safety Management System around Risk Assessments. Also included are topics such as an exploration of why accidents still occur and some ideas on how to prevent them. The importance of near miss reporting and how to encourage ship staff to report near misses is considered. The sessions can be made specific to the requirements of a particular Company.
The course is suitable not only for persons involved in the role of Designated Person Ashore, but also for:
